Our Story

Dr. Geith Shahoud has embarked on a remarkable journey, transitioning from Syria to Western Pennsylvania, leaving a lasting impact on the field of psychiatry. After graduating from the University of Damascus in 1992, he initially practiced internal medicine for three years before shifting his focus to Pittsburgh in 1994.

During his tenure from 1998 to 2001 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Dr. Shahoud practiced internal medicine. However, his passion for psychiatry continued to flourish. Recognizing an opportunity to merge his medical background with psychiatry, he made the decision to pursue a program at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, graduating in August 2004. Subsequently, he practiced child psychiatry at the University of Missouri, Columbia until 2007.

In 2008, Dr. Shahoud returned to the Pittsburgh area, assuming the role of Medical Director of Mental Health at Highland Hospital in Connellsville, PA. During his time there, he provided comprehensive treatment to adults grappling with drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, as well as emotional and behavioral challenges. Additionally, he specialized in addressing behavioral and pervasive developmental disorders such as Autism or Rett Syndrome in children.

Continuing his commitment to the field, Dr. Shahoud joined Southwood Psychiatric Hospital for children in Pittsburgh, PA, serving as a medical director. Presently, he continues his pivotal role there, overseeing the care of patients grappling with diverse psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, Dr. Shahoud has extended his expertise to Excela Health Latrobe Hospital in Latrobe, PA, where he has provided treatment for children and adults with various psychiatric conditions.

In 2009, Dr. Shahoud realized his vision by establishing his private practice, Western PA Behavioral Health Resources (WPABHR). This endeavor has experienced significant growth, prompting the opening of a second office in Latrobe, PA, followed by another in Pittsburgh, PA in 2019. WPABHR now boasts a team of three psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and specialized therapists, ensuring comprehensive care for their patients.

Notably, in 2021, Dr. Shahoud’s expertise and dedication led to his appointment as a State of Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Board Member, aiming to enhance the utilization of medical marijuana in the treatment of mental illnesses. Additionally, he serves on the medical review sub-committee alongside Physician General of Pennsylvania.

WPABHR’s influence extends beyond individual practice, as they have served as the primary consultant for the IU1, responsible for the care of school districts in Fayette, Washington, and Green Counties.
